RICHARD LAWRENCE ECKARD
June 18th, 1921 - July 31st, 2010
(Mr. Eckard was my 4th cousin twice removed; we are associated through our common ancestor, Adam "Pioneer" Eckard 1728[est]-1803)
Richard Lawrence Eckard, 89, formerly of Hickory, died Saturday, July 31, 2010 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. Born on June 18, 1921 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Heber Lawrence Eckard and Sallie Pearl Keller Eckard. He was a lifelong member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fostina Eckard; grandson, Timothy L. Eckard; sisters, Mable Watts and Emma Fairchild; and brothers, Thad Eckard, Fred Eckard, Everett Eckard and Ray Eckard.
He is survived by his sons, Jackie Eckard and his wife, Louise of Hickory, Adrian H. Eckard and his wife, Ruth of Conover and Michael Eckard and Karen Sigmon of Conover; grandchildren, John Mark Eckard and his wife, Heather, Donna Eckard Rader and her husband, Brent, Jody Eckard and his wife, Joanne and Ginny Eckard; great-grandchildren, John Mark Eckard, Jr., Megan Rader, Mason Rader, Jordan Eckard, Nastacia McCorkle, Ashley Seagle and Alea Seagle, sister, Floy Starnes of Hickory; brother, Joe Eckard of Conover; and many cousins.
A service of remembrance will be held 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church with the Reverend Paul D. Birner and the Reverend Matthew Schilling officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30-2:45 p.m. at the church.
Pallbearers honoring Mr. Eckard are Mark Eckard, Brent Rader, Barry Matthews, Jody Eckard, Ronnie Starnes and Gary Eckard.
Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 6175 St. Peter’s Church Rd., Conover, NC 28613.

Visitation and ServicesFuneral Services for Oliver Eckard will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday January 14, 2011 in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with Rev. Bill Burch officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Hickory.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese.
ObituaryMr. Oliver Eckard, 89, of Hickory, died Sunday January 9, 2011 at Autumn Care of Drexel, after a period of declining health.
Mr. Eckard was born January 6, 1922 in Burke County to the late David and Jane Biddix Eckard. He served his country as a member of the US Army during WW II and retired after more than 30 years from Drexel Heritage Furniture Co. Oliver was an avid woodworker and for many years enjoyed working in his shop at his home. He also enjoyed spending time fishing and gardening.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Caroline Taylor Eckard, six brothers and five sisters.
Surviving are two sons, Alan Eckard and wife Kathy of Saw Mills, Buddy Eckard and wife Lucy of Hickory, three daughters, Diane Neece and husband Andrew of Connelly Springs, Iris Gilliland and husband, Terry of Nebo, and Bonnie Young of Morganton and one sister, Christine Eller of Lenoir. Also surviving are nine grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Oliver Eckard will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday January 14, 2011 in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with Rev. Bill Burch officiating. Interment will follow in the Woodlawn Cemetery, Hickory.
